Average Time Spent Viewing per day for Children

The graphs below look at children's levels of viewing television, by age group, over the past 10 years. It shows that children view around 120-140 minutes of television per day, depending on their age group. These levels have remained remarkably consistent over the past 10 years. This is in spite of an increase in the number of (pay) channels available.

Television Advertising and Children

There has been debate in recent times regarding the effect of television viewing on children, with particular comment in recent times regarding the effect of excessive television viewing and extended exposure to television advertising on children's weight and levels of exercise. Little original research has beene conducted in New Zealand on this topic and the relevance of overseas studies is problematic.

Children's lives have changed considerably over the past 10 years, and diet and exercise patterns have been a part of those changes. Fast food has become a more regular part of the diet for many children and families. Computer games and playstations have been invented. More children live in apartments or properties with less outdoor space. All these elements are part of the modern world of the child which remains largely determined by adults, including television viewing.
