Finalists announced for the 2006 Qantas Television Awards

Finalists for the 2006 Qantas Television Awards were announced today. The awards recognise excellence in all New Zealand television production, including news and current affairs.

This year the television award categories saw some standout shows. In drama, The Insiders Guide to Love on TV2 was a finalist 10 times, Doves of War on TV3 was a finalist six times and Outrageous Fortune had four finalist nominations. While across the 10 news and current affairs categories TV ONE had 19 finalists, TV2's 20/20 had three, and TV3 had nine.

Brent Impey, Chairman of the NZ Television Broadcasters' Council said the Qantas Television Awards, established in 2005, celebrate the best of the thousands of hours of free-to-air Kiwi television screened each year. "The awards give us all the chance to pat ourselves on the back and celebrate our industry. The 10 per cent increase in entries this year is also a sign of the strength of the New Zealand television industry, and the fact that viewers love New Zealand content."

Qantas New Zealand Regional General Manager Grant Lilly said, "Qantas are very pleased to see the strength of the television awards in only their second year. Honouring the people who make great television whether it's in news, current affairs, children's or reality formats are part of what Qantas likes doing. We are delighted to be associated with this event. Congratulations to all of this year's finalists."

In addition to the 31 peer-voted categories, the public can vote for its favourite shows and personalities in The Woman's Day Readers' Choice TV Awards. Voting is available in four categories – Favourite New Zealand Male Personality, Favourite New Zealand Female Personality, Favourite New Zealand Television Show and Favourite International Show. Voting forms are available in the October 30 issue of Woman's Day, on sale October 23 or online www.womansday.co.nz. Voting for the readers' choice component closes at midday on Friday, November 17.

The 2006 Qantas Television Awards will be presented by Dominic Bowden and Petra Bagust at the Auckland Aotea Centre on Saturday, November 18. The event will screen on TV3 with same day delayed coverage at 9.30pm. Also appearing as special guest presenters at the starstudded gala ceremony will be renowned Australian Logie winners, Rove Live host, Rove McManus, and Kiwi actor Lisa Chappell.

The NZTBC is made up of CanWest TVWorks and Television New Zealand.
